The Covid-19 cases in the Eastern Region have risen sharply from 1 to 21 as 20 more cases have been recorded.
Municipal health director, Bismark Sarkodie who confirmed the new cases to correspondent Kofi Siaw, said they are expecting more results from Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.
The 20 new cases are among the 244 persons who were quarantined at the Afcon Construction Company in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality where an Indian expatriate working on the Akosombo to Tema railway project tested positive for the virus in March.
Out of this, 19 had contact with the Indian expatriate. One is yet to be ascertained.
The Eastern Regional Health Directorate on April 9, 2020, announced that it had submitted a total of 373 samples of suspected coronavirus cases in the region to Noguchi, awaiting results.
Out of the number, 244 samples were taken from contacts connected to the Indian expatriate.
Results from the research facility indicated that out of the 244 samples, 20 were positive.
The new confirmed cases could be among the 65 new cases announced by the government sending the national tally to 378.
The Ghana Health Service has yet to confirm the new cases announced by President Akufo-Addo during his sixth address to the nation on government’s measures to control the spread of Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by coronavirus.
