Nigeria’s veteran midfielder John Mikel Obi has become the third most capped player for the Super Eagles after he featured in Saturday’s friendly game against Zimbabwe.
With his appearance on Saturday, the 32-year-old is surpassed Nwanko Kanu on the chart, and now stands 14 places behind joint leaders Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama.
Mikel could make it 94 appearance for the Super Eagles in Egypt should his side make it beyond the quarter final stage.
“I am still very much motivated and if I am not I won’t have come to the camp,” Mikel said after Nigeria’s goalless draw with Zimbabwe.
“The team has been fantastic until now because of the way they have been playing and I have come to offer my experience and to help the team so that we can have a good tournament.”
Nigeria heads into the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations seeking a fourth title, six years after they won their third.
The Super Eagles missed the previous two AFCON editions after failing to qualify.
Coach Gernot Rohr named his squad for the continental duty, mixing youth with experience.
The West Africans are pooled alongside Guinea, Madagascar and Burundi in Group B, and will begin their campaign against the East Africans on 22 June.
